We have plans to see Skellig Michael (weather permitting) on July 31 and are conflicted about where to stay the night before. I noticed a post four years ago recommended Waterville, but I haven't found anything more recently and there isn't anything left in Portmagee. Suggestions?
Well, my experience was 11 years ago this month, but I stayed in Cahersiveen, a few miles up the road from Portmagee, the night before my Skellig Michael day. I was traveling by touring bicycle from Dingle that day, and it saved pedaling some additional miles all the way to Portmagee for the night. It was a pleasant small town, comfortable, quiet hotel. Next morning I rode a fairly short distance to take the car (and bike) ferry onto Valentia Island, then got to the Skellig boat docks from there. Will you be going by car?
We stayed at a very nice B&B outside Portmagee (maybe a 10-15 minute drive?) called "Uisce Beatha" (you'll need a car, but you'll need that for most of this area anyway, so I assume that's not an issue). As I recall, I found it through booking.com. Worth a look.
Be aware the island is currently closed to visitors due to a rockfall. Hopefully they will be able to reopen by the time of your visit. https://heritageireland.ie/places-to-visit/skellig-michael/
Wow, I had no idea of the closure. We will be traveling by car, but I will look into the places you all have mentioned and hopefully the island will be reopened soon. Thank you all for the replies.
