Hi. I'm trying to reserve a short trip on BusEireann from Galway to Doolin. I'm finding it hard to reserve in advance. Does anyone know if these tickets must be booked closer to travel? I'll be traveling May 18.

I've just looked as it wouldn't strike me to book such a journey ahead of time. Most BE rural services are mainly turn up and go.
However, looking here- https://www.buseireann.ie/plan-and-book I see that bookings are available on May 18.
Now whether BE accept American credit cards will be an interesting question. Given the propensity for your inbound flight being late, and thus your train/bus connection time to Galway being uncertain I'm not sure I would book a specific Galway to Doolin connection, but that is just my musing.
