Layover in Dublin airport - can I leave and come back?

I will be flying from Paris to Boston on Aer Lingus with a connection in Dublin. Our layover in Dublin is 5 hours long. According to Aer Lingus our bags will be checked from Paris straight through to Boston. We were hoping to be able to leave the airport and go into Dublin for lunch since we have such a long layover. Does anyone know if this is possible? Will we be allowed to leave the airport and come back in for our flight to Boston? Has anyone done this successfully? Thank you?

To leave Dublin airport you will need to pass immigration with the same returning. Based on other people's stories this can be lightening fast or painfully slow for non EU nationals.

Plus you would need to build an hour at least from the airport into central Dublin.

My recommendation would be no. The time simply does not allow it.

Possible? Yes. Play it by ear. We actually have to spend the night in August on the way back to Chicago. Planning on dropping carry-on bags at our airport hotel, then hopping the bus to Dublin and lifting a few pints at The Temple Bar before closing hour. Buses are frequent and not too dear.

I am not sure if the airport has improved, but it was the most confusing set up I have ever seen. Even our Taxi driver that drove us in from Dublin had to go around several times before he could get it. It is a ways out of town just like most airports are.

Keep in mind that if you are returning to Boston, you will go through US immigration/passport control in Dublin. This may take up a big chunk of your layover time.
