Latest scoop on Skellig Michael visit

After a few requests I've done some sleuthing, including speaking directly with four boat captains. Here's is a bit of info which will correct some of what's already in previous posts, and clarify more....

Some boat captains ARE taking reservations now, for summer. HOWEVER they are still waiting on the official opening date (that's determined by OPW - Office of Public Works), so they will take, say, July bookings, but are waiting on May and early June bookings in case it's not open that early for landings.

Additionally, no one officially knows if they are granted the license to take people out, yet. Clearly, almost everyone that passes the inspections year after year, does get the renewal. But some might not be willing to book - just know that at least 4 of them are!

It's strongly suggested you stay near the Skellig Coast area, so as not to miss the boat and to enjoy the area after the cruise. There are too many people rushing in and rushing out and not doing anything in the area - and area full of culture, myth and beauty! There is talk about setting something up like they have in Scotland at St Andrews Golf Club.... if you want a good tee time during peak season, you have to committ to 4 nights in the area. They won't do THAT down here (I'd bet my bike on that) but they are close to requiring a night in the area before they go out!. (For an example, one guy on my boat in September drove in from Dingle (where there is a boat, actually) to portmagee, and then went to Galway that night. It's not safe to do that kind of driving, in most people's opinion! Don't push it!

There has been quite a bit of backlash due to the Tourism Ireland group jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon. They are now advertising, aggressively, an experience that was already 100 percent booked last year! So be prepared for other alternatives in case you cannot make the boat landing (due to weather, too). You might do a boat ride AROUND Skellig Michael and Little Skellig. A trip to The Skellig Experience on Valentia Island near Portmagee bridge. Viewing the islands from The Kerry Cliffs; St. Finians Bay; Bray Head...... Following the "Monk Trail" that includes Ballinskelligs Abbey, Church Island in Waterville, and more. There are tours (Iveragh Historical Tours is one) that can help you explore the Skellig Monk experience..... without making a 7 mile boat ride over open ocean!

Thank you so much for the updated report! You are such a valuable forum member. I just can't wait to get to Ireland. I only wish I planned this trip before Star Wars invaded Skellig Michael.

Jerrygosa -

Some recommendations for that area;

Iveragh Historical Tours
SeaSynergy (beach environment tours; snorkelling tours)
Gerry Enright in Cahersiveen (Cahersiveen walking/history tours)
Julie Ormande Dark Sky star watching tours (kerrydarksky@eircom.net

Is this what you're thinking about?

They're also working on driving itineraries for the area - but they have been working on them for a while! Don't know when they'll have the new website up with them as pdf files! Hope soon....

Hi Susan,

I have a family of 6 adults coming from US to Ireland in late May/early June. Do you know which boat operators are currently taking reservations? You mentioned there are 4 for sure above. And do you know which boats are big enough to have toilets? And how about ones that will allow a booking of 6 people?

Thank you,
Brenda

Thanks for your updated information.

I must ask. If you do not go on the landing, and just do the boat ride, can you see anything from the boat? What I mean is, can you see the structures, the stone steps, etc? I know it must be a beautiful boat ride, but with all the heightened interest in the area, the effort may just not be worth it. We are planning to go to the Aran islands, if that matters.

Thanks!

Yes you can see the steps from the boat. Don't recall seeing the huts, might be difficult unless the boat was at the right spot.

But nothing can compare to being on the island.
