Kinsale to Portmagee

I have been working on planning a day long trip. We will leave in the morning and need to get to a Portmagee B and B that evening. I have been planning to see the Muckross House, then go on to Portmagee, but just read about Mizen Head. Am I correct that accomplishing seeing Mizen Head and Muckross is not really a great plan? Or is it a possibility if we get an early start....

My apologies... I missed that in the title {embarrassed...}.

You have a fairly long day's drive ahead of you. Muckross House will make a good stop for walking around a bit and stretch your legs. The Torc waterfall is not far either. Below Ross Castle is a ?boat club, where boats wait to take tourists over to the Innisfallen Island. We truly enjoyed the short crossing on the lake to the abbey ruins. We even spotted a small deer behind the abbey.

You'll also be able to have lunch in Killarney, at whatever hour you get decide to eat - there are lots of choices.

IMO, looping over to Mizen Head will not be worth it - it will be slow going. I take it that you are probably planning on spending a bit of time doing the RoK and the Dingle Peninsula?

There is so much to see and do in Killarney, that I would just plan on a solid break from driving for a few hours, before heading out to Portmagee.

Another stop that you can make is in Kenmare, on the way to Killarney - stretch your legs and have an ice cream. It's also the best place that we found for souvenir shopping. The road from Kenmare to Killarney climbs, is twisty, and offers a few nice photo stops.

Deb,
Mizen Head is a very easy drive to do from Kinsale. It's probably the best thing to see in west cork. That said if the weather isn't good don't take the time to do it. I would do that and then drive to Portmagee, the remaining ring of Kerry isn't that great after Portmagee. You could always afterwards do the mountain pass from there over to Muckross House. And then head to Dingle or wherever your headed next.

I like the idea of Mizen Head one day and Muckross the next on the way to Dingle..

So is there anything we should plan to see on the way from Kinsale to Dingle? What is the best route?
