If you could only visit one which would you choose? Also, for anyone who has seen both, are they on the same idea? Not sure we will be able to visit both and trying to see where the added time should go if we have to choose. If they are on the same idea and both equal then that may make a difference in our plans. Thank you
In Northern Ireland I’d do Crumlin Road in Belfast.
Learn about The Troubles.
Also visit the Titanic Museum. Have seafood chowder at Mournes ( where production personnel and the Game of Thrones cast would go). Its next to Kelly Cellars pub.
I have toured many jails (BTW- stateside I recommend the one in Philadelphia- Eastern State pen). Kilmainham is much, much more of a history museum AND jail tour. Lots of really interesting exhibits. Crumlin is less developed and more of a jail tour only. From my perspective, K is far more comprehensive. If I had to choose, definitely K. That being said, C was a highlight for us in Belfast as we “enjoy” old prisons.
If you choose Kilmainham (which we thought was excellent, but we did not see Crumlin except from the outside, so can't compare), spend the extra time in Belfast doing a murals tour, if that isn't already in your plans. I highly, highly recommend https://belfastblackcabtours.co.uk
I would choose Kilmainham Gaol because of it’s importance to Irish independence and a black taxi tour in Belfast to learn about the troubles. (I’ve been to Kilmainham twice and did the black taxi tour and saw the outside of Crumlin but not inside.)
