I like to find places that are as spectacular as the major tourist sites. I read some about Kilkee Cliff walk and wondered how it compared to Cliffs of Moher. Has anyone been to both?
I haven't been to the Kilkee Cliffs. The Cliffs of Moher are well worth the visit (even 10 years after they were commercialized, with shops built into the rock), if just to peer over the edge while lying on your belly, the wind blowing in your face.
Even more spectacular, with a dramatic view to match, is Slieve League in southwestern County Donegal. At 2,000 feet, they're the loftiest cliffs in Europe. A long, winding road takes you to the top.
Also in County Donegal - in the far northwest - is the majestic, conical-shaped Mr. Errigal, visible from several mile away on a southern approach.
The cliff walk in Kilkee is nice, and a real "off the beaten path" thing to do, but doesn't quite compare to the Cliffs of Moher, which are famous for good reason.
If you'll have a car and are interested in exploring some of the lesser known sites, especially around Connemara and Donegal, I'd suggest looking at "Back Roads Ireland" which lists scenic drives and lesser known sites throughout the Republic and NI. We enjoyed it very much last year on our own trip, and in fact it was the only guidebook we carried aside from the RS publication.
Thanks for the suggestions, I will definitely look into them. I want to see all the great places but need to be smart about time.
Someone also told me the views from the Aran Islands is similar.
