Itinerary question - Portrush to Cliffs of Moher

Hi,
We will be in Ireland in July. We have our trip planned except for one day. We will be leaving Portrush on the 25th and are planning to see the Cliffs of Moher on the 27th. We were planning to drive to Kylemore Abbey on the 26th and staying somewhere close to Kylemore Abbey. Does anyone have a suggestion for a place to stay the night of the 26th? Is Kylemore Abbey worth seeing or is there something better to do/see on that day? Maybe we should to try to stay in Galway? Or make it all the way to Doolin and skip Kylemore Abbey?

Thanks for your help!

If you want to splurge and stay somewhere very nice, Ballynahinch Castle is close to Kylemore Abbey. Otherwise, you could pick from any number of B&Bs in places like Roundstone or Clifden. If you want to stay someplace further south so you don't have as long of a drive to get to the Cliffs on the 27th, Galway is only about a 90 minute drive away - lots of sensibly priced B&Bs along College Road, several nice hotels (like The G, Hotel Meyrick, Jurys Inn or Radisson Blu). If you don't want to stay in a city, someplace like Kinvara (on the other side of Galway Bay and sitting on the edge of The Burren) could make for a good stopover as it has about a dozen pubs (some have live music) and a few good restaurants.

..........and then, if you REALLY want to splurge a bit, Ashford Castle in Cong is fabulous place to stay. Check out their web site (originally home of the Guinness family, and a very impressive one at that.) They offer some good specials from time to time, and if there is not one shown on the web site for the day you plan to be there, email them and likely you will find they send an offer to you (unless they are booked up, if you mean THIS July).
But, regardless, after you visit Kylemore Abbey, it's not a super far drive over to Cong to visit Ashford Castle.
If you don't stay there, you could do lunch there. For people not staying at the castle, there is a modest gate fee.

If you stay there overnight, sign up for the Hawk Walk through the Falconry School at Ashford Castle. You Tube has lots of posts of various people enjoying the experience. But, basically each person gets his/her own hawk, and they teach you how to launch and land your hawk, after an introduction. Can't remember if the whole experience is one hour or two, but it was great fun.

In Galway, Key Street if a fun place to lunch. Street musicians and cute little shops, various pubs & restaurants. My guess is that it would be lively at night, too (but we were only there during mid-day).

The drive thru the Connemara region (where Kylemore is located) is beautiful, and if you drive over toward Ashford as you leave, you will see more beautiful scenery.

You didn't mention where you would be going next, but if you are flying out of Shannon, try to see the Bunratty Folk Park. As my Irish cousin told me when she was encouraging us to stop there, 'It's as close to what Ireland would have been like when your grandmother was a young girl (which would have been in the 1800s).

Ireland is a lovely country, the people are so very genuinely kind and friendly, and the landscape (while it changes a bit as you drive an hour or so) is peacefully beautiful.

Safe travels.
