Itinerary help-West Coast self-drive 7 nights (B&Bs)

Looking for itinerary help and suggestions for mother/daughter self-drive B&B trip this September along the West Coast of Ireland. Having issues figuring out what makes logical sense for best route/overnight stops (and recs for must-do sites along the way!).

Booked: Flight/rental car, first night at Ashford Castle (our one non B&B splurge), last night Bunratty Medieval dinner (stay somewhere convenient to Shannon airport). We have no B&B reservations at this point (bad idea? only need one room).

  • Day/Night 1 Ashford
  • Day 2 Dunlaire, Burren, Cliffs Moher –Night 2: Doolin
  • Day 3 Aran Islands day trip --- **night 3: ?? no idea* (want to head to Dingle via Ferry route but know unrealistic to make it there) Listowel? Ballybunion? (really no clue, just naming places on map)*
  • Day 4 Finish drive to Dingle –start exploration Night 4 Dingle
  • Day 5 Dingle, Blasket…start drive towards ROK/Killarney….. Night 5? Kenmare? Killarney? Somewhere in ROK?
  • Day 6 Skellig and ROK….. Night 6 hoping same place as Night 5
  • Day 7 explore Killarney with Jaunting cart, drive through Adare to Bunratty for last night

Appreciate any suggestions!

For day 3, I would stay another night in Doolin and enjoy the pub scene for dinner and local music. Then you could always get a good start on your way to Dingle in the morning. For the Aran Islands day trip, you may not be able to leave on the boat as early as you would like. The islands are so special you'll want to stay as long as you can and take the last boat back to Doolin. Doolin is a fun little town to explore and slow down.

I recommend Pax Guest House in Dingle. Spectacular view across the harbor, just up the hill from town, fantastic host. Cannot recommend Killarney town -- but the park is lovely.

  • Day 3 Aran Islands day trip ---Night 3: Doolin
  • Day 4 Drive to Dingle via Shannon Ferry route –Night 4 Dingle (looking at B&Bs still - Sherrie - Pax Guest House looks beautiful -- is it hotel?)
  • Day 5 exploring Dingle, Blasket…Night 5 Dingle
  • Day 6 very early start to Skellig and ROK…..Night 6? thinking Kenmare (any suggestions for B&Bs in Kenmare??)**

I am jealous that you are going to stay at Ashford. We stayed there three years ago with our TAUCK tour group. Unfortunately, everybody was sorry that we had to leave after only two nights. It is a gorgeous location. My husband really wished he had had clothes and shoes for the muddy, hawk feeding option. We have read it was the highlight for some people visiting Ireland. They just finished a total remodel of the hotel also.

In Dingle, we stayed at Browne's B&B, and loved it. The hosts, John and Camilla, were wonderful, as were the breakfasts. John took the time on our arrival to tell us which pubs would have the best music that night, and his favorite restaurants in Dingle. Camilla gave us great tips on the Slea Head Drive, including some interesting stops that eluded even Rick! I can't recommend it enough. One note is that it is just slightly outside of the town center, so there is maybe a 10 minute walk. But we enjoyed it.

Pax is a B&B -- not a hotel. But it is in a former retirement home, so that's why it is situated as it is. But the best part (aside from the view) is the host, John. He is absolutely fantastic. It's like staying in a friend's home, but better. The breakfast is yummy. There are chickens on the property, and a super sweet dog, and a lovely art collection.
If you make it to Kinsale (gorgeous, quaint town on the water) The Cloisters B&B, with hostesses Orla and Aileen. Utterly charming.
