Itinerary Help (Ireland & Scotland 10 day trip)

Hey all,

My head is about to explode with so much research - I need some help. I'm heading over to Dublin in August for work and wanted to spend an extra 10 or so days exploring Ireland and Scotland. I'm going to fly my wife up after my work duties are done and we will have about 10 days to play with. The only requirement is Edinburgh (my wife's family is from this area of Scotland and she's never been so she really wants to go).

Can you all help with an itinerary that helps us see as much as possible but not too much that we don't enjoy it. We will be renting a car to get around as needed (and assume we will be flying from Dublin to Scotland).

Thanks!

Let's say you want to divide the two countries equally, 5 days each (I'm figuring just 9 nights, though).

You're starting in Dublin and presumably will have at least a little bit of time outside of work to scope out your favorite spots to share with your wife when she arrives, so allow 1 night in Dublin for the two of you. Then rent a car and head west to Westport or Connemara for 2 nights. Drive south to Shannon, spend your 4th night, then fly Shannon to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh 1-2 nights, choose another destination such as Stirling or St Andrews or Blair Atholl for 2-3 nights, and return to Edinburgh for the last night before you fly home.

I realize I'm omitting some of the "gotta see" highlights of Ireland, but I'm figuring that after working in Dublin for several days you'd want a more rural or small town Ireland base and not rush from one "blockbuster" sight to the next.

Another reasonable solution would be to focus on just one country or the other. Meet your wife in Edinburgh and spend 10 days seeing Scotland. Or, spend a week touring Ireland, fly to Edinburgh for the last 2-3 days and home from there.

Here are our thoughts so far:

-Arrive in Dublin on Wednesday afternoon (I'll already be in Dublin)
-Thursday & Friday in Dublin and surrounding area
-Saturday - fly to Inverness and pick up rental --> drive to Isle of Skye and see the sights along the way
-Sunday & Monday - explore Isle of Skye
-Tuesday - start working way back to Edinburgh spending the night around Fort William / Glencoe
-Wednesday - Friday - explore Edinburgh and surrounding area
-Saturday - fly home
