Itinerary for a month in Ireland ??? Edited with suggestions......

I think I have it figured out.

All these are bases for day trips around that area.

We are planning on 4 nights in Dublin to start,

4 nights in Killkenny and doing day trips to Waterford, Wexford County, and the Rock of Cashel)
3 in Kinsale
2 in Killarney ( I know most prefer Kenmare but we did choose Killarney)
3 in Dingle
3 in Galway for day trips around (Cliffs, The Burren and Dunguaire Castle Supper as day trips)
1 night in Westport

here I'm not sure.....We want to stop in Sligo before moving on to Derry but not sure if Sligo would be the place to sleep or Derry or elsewhere......Will need to tighten this part up So it may be one night in Sligo and one in Derry OR 2 in Westport a stop in Sligo on the way to Derry.....

2 in Portrush
2 in Belfast and then
one last night in Trimm before flying home.......

We will be Me 47 hubby 50 and my Mom who is 74. We love small towns, picturesque drives, and relaxed touring. We are not going hiking.....LOL

We will have a car for all of this except the 4 days in Dublin.

thoughts now ?

Just looking at the number of times you are moving is exhausting to me! Also, keep in mind your travel times between destinations may be a little longer than anticipated. Just my humble opinion....

Well I think your itinerary looks good. Not too much moving around for one month if you want to see the whole island. Have a fantastic time and would love to read a TR when you return!

This looks reasonable. You have at least 2 nights in most places, so you won’t be checking in and out of places every day. I visited all of these places (except Belfast) in just under a month and enjoyed the pace.

You have 2 nights in Portrush (perhaps for day trips to Giants Causeway and the Rope Bridge areas). It was a nice town, but one night was enough for me. With an early start from Portrush, you could visit Giants Causeway and other places before heading to Belfast. That would give you another night elsewhere.

I spent some time in Sligo to break up the drive from Westport to Derry and because I’m a W.B. Yeats fan.

While in Galway, are you planning a day trip to the Aran Islands? It’s well worth it.

All the best,

Raymond

Sligo..... I will see if we can add it.

The 2 nights in Portrush was arriving in the afternoon one day, going to Giants Causeway and another place the nest day , then sleeping before heading out to Belfast......Might have to change that.

No Aaran Isles for me....... A friend told me how sick she got on the boat and I get more seasick than she does..... Her saying was "I left my bile on Aaran Isle......" YUCK..... I don't think I could handle it.

We prefer 3 night and 4 night stays so I might just willy nilly add a few days in to make longer stops but we MUST come home someday.....LOL

thank you all for the advice so far.

Should we stay in Killkenny for 4 nights and only day trip to Waterford, The Rock of Cashel and County Wexford?

ALSO, Mom loves lighthouses......If there are any that are a must see, please suggest away.

You are all too kind.

I enjoyed my stay in Kilkenny much more than my stay in Waterford. It was a more enjoyable city to walk around in the evenings, and I enjoyed the pubs and music much more than in Waterford. Unless you plan to visit more than a day's worth of sites in Waterford, it's a reasonable day trip from Kilkenny and Rock of Cashel and Wexford are similar distances from both places.

In Kilkenny, I enjoyed Kyteler’s Inn, and the story of the original owner who was the first recorded person in Ireland condemned for witchcraft is sad, but interesting.

Nearby Jerpoint Abbey (30 minutes) and Kells Priory and Kilree High Cross make for a good day or half-day trip (ruins and history).

All the best,

Raymond

We just got back from a month in Ireland. Our preference is not to move around so much, thus we had 4 night stays and 3 night stays. Westport was one of our favorites. Galway was one of our least favorites, very crowded and commercialized with few locals in the pubs. Dingle was great for hiking (and driving), and Kinsale was very pretty. Out of all the B and B's, our hands down favorite was a manor house (Manor Kilbride) run by Margaret Cully--it really was like staying in a castle, very old 18th century home with 40 acres including a walled garden about an hour south of Dublin. You can't go wrong, Ireland is a great place to go.

If lighthouses are your thing, I can recommend two. One is Hook Head in County Wexford, said to be the oldest lighthouse in Europe. The first one on this site was built in the twelfth century. In fact, the entire Hook Head peninsula is worth at least a day or two. There's a big, sandy beach at Duncannon, and an interesting fort with some shops and a tea room. Loftus Hall is supposed to be haunted! Regardless, it's a beautiful house in a beautiful spot. Off the peninsula itself, but still in County Wexford, there's Dunbrody Abbey and Tintern Abbey. Tintern is one of my favourites! You can explore the abbey ruins and there's a restored wall garden. I've gone off the topic of lighthouses, but there's lots to see in Wexford, not just Hook Head!
The other lighthouse I recommend is at Loop Head in County Clare. It's further on from Kilkee, if you look at a map. I think you would enjoy the views from there.

We loved Sligo... especially after Dublin, filled with so many tourists. Felt much more Irish there. Good pubs and music. Yeats walking tour available at the TI. The drive there from Dublin was absolutely beautiful, especially as you neared the coast.
