Hello All!
We're preparing for our trip next week and want to appropriately tip if/when it's expected. Any thoughts, advice, and suggestions on this topic, especially regarding the Hawk Walk Private Tour, are welcome. Thank you!
Let me start by saying that this Hawk Walk was my sister’s highlight of our time in Ireland! I had so much pleasure just watching her having fun.
Tipping is always a personal decision. You are already paying for a private walk and are paying for that tour guide. We did not tip.
I will be doing that tour also next month, can't wait. I always look for a tipping advice when I travel and found this for Ireland:

Thank you, Carol & RC! Your advice is greatly appreciated! Your points & guidance make a lot of sense & very helpful. We're getting ready to leave on Monday, 09/01 & very excited, especially for this experience. It's been on my mind for 7 years since we had to cancel due to a sudden illness during our last visit to Ireland. Thanks again!
Hello All!
Just an update on our Hawk Walk experience at the School of Falconry at Ashford Castle... INCREDIBLE!
Jeff was my Guide/Instructor and he was fantastic! He made my experience so enjoyable and memorable. He's from Texas, so as a fellow US citizen, I felt it would be appropriate to give him a tip to cover a few Guinness pints!
My husband and I are now in Clifden, staying 2 nights at Hillside Lodge B&B on Sky Road. It's a cool place to stay if you enjoy rock concert memorabilia! Nice breakfast and accommodations.
Heading to Westport tomorrow!
thanks for popping back with the update.
Curious - did you tip him because he's a Texan or because you're American, or from input here, or watching what others did? No judgement, just curious...
Fair question, Nigel.
Being from the US definitely is a factor. In the US, most hospitality service employees rely on tips to supplement their hourly wage in order to keep up with cost of living expenses. Not tipping during this trip has been a challenge for me.
That said, based on the link that was provided in the earlier part of this thread, I also checked on my prepaid invoice to see if a service charge was already added. It wasn't showing one, so I reached out to the Ireland School of Falconry and asked for their policy. Yvonne replied that tips aren't expected, but appreciated. So, I went prepared. If I received exceptional service, I was going to give a tip. Jeff provided more than exceptional service!
After the Hawk Walk, my husband and I treated ourselves to the castle's Afternoon Tea. It was a lovely experience and our server, Dominic, was great. Our bill showed a 15% service charge, so in this case, we did not provide a tip.
I hope this clarifies!
