Is there Uber in Ireland?

Hello,
We are leaving for Ireland tomorrow. It seems to me that I read somewhere that Uber/Lyft does not exist in Ireland, but I can't find my notes on that. Don't remember where I saw this information. But apparently one can use the Uber app to reserve a taxi. Am I correct about this? Or is there a specific taxi app to reserve taxis?

We plan on taking a taxi from the airport to our hotel in Dublin. How much should we expect to pay for the taxi? I understand there are buses from the airport to Dublin center, but at our ages we don't want to take public transportation when carrying luggage. And we prefer door to door service. :-) Is there a taxi rank at the airport?
Thanks!
Karen

Hi Karen,
I use the FreeNow app while in Italy, and it looks like its used all over Ireland as well. I would expect to pay 40 -50 euros for the ride from the airport to your hotel.

Jenny, thank you! Do you know if I am correct that Uber does not exist in Ireland?

I saw lots of cars with "Freenow" stickers all over Dublin last month.

Yes, there are taxis at the airport, outside Terminal 2. Look for the maps of where all the bus stops are. Things were well marked.

I used the Uber app in the Cork area; when you use it there, you are booking an official taxi. The same is true in Dublin.

I took a taxi last year. I too didn’t want to deal with the buses. It was super easy. Just follow the signs for taxi as you are leaving the airport. The taxi drivers are very chatty.

I just checked my credit card statement. It was $60.11 from the airport to my hotel (Stauntons on the Green) and $62.89 from my other hotel (Buswells) back to the airport. Your hotel should be able to order the taxi for you for your trip back to the airport.

Have a great trip!! I was there this time last year and it was a great time to go. Not crowded and great weather.

As Laura said, the Uber app works in Ireland and it will call an official taxi for you. However, you will be paying a premium. Use the Freenow app or go to a taxi stand. In Dublin taxi stands are pretty ubiquitous, especially around the hotels. You do not flag a taxi as you might in New York.

Surely you can though? I've never been to Dublin, but I've also never been to a city anywhere where it's impossible to flag down a taxi that has its light on.

In Dublin, we've waved in front of one that was moving, we found one stopped at the curb and asked him (he said hop in), and we found another one stopped at a light (he said hop in).

But if I were going to the airport, I'd have the hotel call ahead to arrange a cab (done that too).

I've always paid with Google Wallet on my phone, my friend always paid with a credit card.

I was told by a friend who lives in Dublin that I shouldn't expect to flag down a taxi like I've done in the US. Maybe the difference is whether they are already stopped at a light or at a curb.

Ah fair enough. Like I said, I'm not speaking from experience of Dublin specifically, just of taxis that are running a meter and light in general. I did some Googling and from what I can gather, taxis work normally in Dublin like they do other places, but sometimes can be difficult to flag down because the drivers don't always stop.

Thank you so much to trotter, GerryM, and travelerguy,
My main concern is getting to our hotel from the airport. So we will walk to the official taxi rank.

My other concern is taking a taxi from our hotel to Kilmainham Gaol. I think we will have the hotel desk clerk reserve a taxi for us because we certainly don't want to risk missing our appointed entrance time.

Will also download the Freenow app since using the Uber app will cost more money. Why is that, BTW?

Regarding getting back to the airport, we will be coming from Belfast (with a stop at Newgrange), and we will return our car at the airport since we are staying overnight at an airport hotel.
