I am staying in an Air B&B place in Sutton and was planing on visiting New Grange and some other sites in the Boyne Valley. I saw on a map that the bus line 102 goes up to Drogheda and was wondering if we took the bus would it be feasible to get to the Bru na Boine site via cab without breaking the bank? Otherwise we would have to go back into Dublin and take an organized tour. Has anyone done this trip as I propose to do?
Might be most cost-effective to hire a car and driver for the day.
Can do a Google search to see what pops up or, alternatively, check with the host at your accommodation to see if they can recommend someone locally at a reasonable price.
I don't know where Sutton is but from the bus station downtown you can take a Bus Eireann tour to the Boyne Valley. It stops at Newgrange long enough to tour either Newgrange or other option (Howth?). It stops at Hill of Tara long enough to see the video and wander around. It also goes by the Battle of the Boyne and Trim castle (both were essentially a short stop with a description by the driver).
I took this trip my last time in Dublin and was pleased with the pacing and value. It essentially starts after breakfast and ends before dinner. It's now 31 euro.
Rick's Ireland guidebook (p. 122) estimates taxi fare from Drogheda at about 8 euros one way. Google Maps locates a few cab companies.
