Irish Rail Question

On a ticket from Cork to Belfast, I change train stations in Dublin, from Hueston to Connolly, via LUAS. The LUAS transfer is part of the ticket. Two questions:

  1. When using LUAS, do I scan my Irish Rail ticket?

  2. Is 50 minutes enough time, from arrival at Hueston to departure at Connolly, to transfer between stations?

Thanks for any help!!

Hi Traveler99,
I'm not exactly sure about your first question but if it's like the other tram tickets, there should be a machine you tap before you get on. As far as timing, I would think 50 mins is plenty of time. The tram between the two stations takes 20 mins (and I've walked between the two and it took me about 45 min.) Enjoy your trip!

KimberlySEA,

Thank you for your reply.

The train ticket is a QR code, my question is: do I scan it for LUAS, and if so, where? It is not a tap in/tap out card, but a QR code. My understanding is that on Irish Rail you scan it to board the train at a turnstile, or if no turnstile, show the code on board to the staff.

I have been on trams in Rome, where I have seen tourists have a ticket, but not punch it when boarding the tram, and getting checked for a ticket and fined for not punching it on the tram. I might be over cautious, but I want to follow the rules.

If it's a QR code ticket then you don't have to do anything to join or leave the tram. But if a revenue inspector joins the tram then have it ready to show him/her to be scanned with their hand held device.
There are ticket gates at Cork (Kent) Station, Dublin Heuston and Connolly and Belfast (Grand Central).

Isn31c,

Thank you for your reply.

I will just board the tram and not worry about validating the QR code.

What are your thoughts on the 50 minute time frame from arrival at Heuston to departure at Connolly?

Thanks

I'm happy at 50 minutes. I too could walk it in that time if LUAS was down.

Or take bus #4 to Eden Quay (which your train ticket is also valid on).

Or, I suppose, hop in a cab.

If, for any reason, the Cork train is heavily delayed then now the Belfast train is hourly there should be plenty of seats on the next train.
But I think I would spend an extra 2.5 Euro and make a seat only reservation on the next Belfast train as belt and braces. Your ticket itself would be valid if the worst happened.

Goodness knows what the airport bit is about, but from the journey planner it can be seen that the 1257 is a LUAS tram. All you do is walk out of the front door of Heuston and the LUAS platform is right there. A 16 minute change is long enough to get bored waiting.

Thanks isn31c!

[note: I deleted my post after exploring the LUAS information and time tables]
