Irish rail, Dublin to Belfast, need to book?

We want to travel by train from Dublin Connolly to Belfast (Grand Central, I assume, since only Belfast is listed). We'll want either the 11:50am or 12:50pm train but are willing to pay full fare flex, so that we can decide that day. Can someone confirm these trains don't sell out? I've searched several days starting as soon as tomorrow, just to get an idea and it looks like only the low and semi-flex tickets seem to sell out. Is that correct? Would we have any problem getting a ticket at the station, day of?

Our timing isn't too critical and we'd like to do something in the morning in Dublin, before leaving so that's why I want to stay flexible.
Thank you.

Trains don’t sell out.

You will need ETAs in case you were not aware.

Thank you for the confirmation on the trains and for the reminder on the ETA. We plan to apply for that just before we leave the US, wanting to squeeze the full time out of it (hoping to travel to UK again to visit family in the next couple of years.)

However note that if you literally buy the ticket at the station (as opposed to online at the last possible moment) you will pay €30.40.

Also buying on line allows you to choose your seat from a seating diagram.

good to know about buying ticket online vs at the station. I think since we're more likely to take the later train, I'll probably go ahead and book that one flex, before we leave the US. It looks like we get up to 60 minutes before departure to change.

We just got back from our trip. We bought our rail ticket to Belfast online, about 2 weeks ahead. Collecting it at the station was quick and easy, I just entered the code into a kiosk and the tickets were printed. Since we bought online, our seats were reserved and labeled on the electronic banner above the seat. Available seats are marked in green. There were some seats left open as we traveled.
We applied for our UK ETA about a week ahead of travel, it was easy on the app. Once approved (response via email in a few minutes) you don't need to save any receipt/email/code - it's just electronically attached to your passport number. Since we were traveling from Dublin to Belfast, our passports were never checked. Now we're ready for our next trip to the UK!
On our return we took the bus from Belfast to Dublin airport, having booked our tickets about a month ahead, on Aircoach - we chose that line because it was the best timing (7:10am, stopping at terminal 2 first about 9:25). It was easy and smooth. The seats were fine, nothing luxurious. We were in the first group to board at about 7am when the bus pulled in but by the time we left the bus was completely full. It was a bit loud with everyone talking but I had my headphones on and listened to a book the whole way. All in all, an efficient, reasonably priced way to get directly to Dublin airport from Belfast Grand Central station.
