Ireland / worried about Brexit

We are flying into Dublin in mid-April for an 9-day vacation and have been using your guide to research. It's a great resource, and we love your podcast too! We were planning on visiting the Antrim Coast and Donegal but are worried about the impact of the Brexit deadline. Could borders close? Could this cause big delays? Should we be worried about unrest? We are considering sticking strictly to Ireland and avoiding any border crossing. Wondering what others thought.

Your trip begins enough time after Brexit goes into effect for you to get real answers instead of speculation. This question comes up often and nobody really knows

Nobody knows what will happen. Thousands of people cross the Irish border each day, so no one wants to see them queuing to get through the border. We haven’t built a wall yet across the border - perhaps we should ask the Irish to pay for this? Nothing is going to be in place very quickly.

I would stick to your current plans.

The UK is leaving the EU, the RoI is not. There is no need to worry. What the border will look like is a very good question, but in six weeks we'll know.

jchakulski, just to clarify, while Rick Steves does the guidebooks with staff, and the same with the podcasts, these Forums - while hosted here by the same organisation - are just a bunch of fellow folk who love travel and helping people, and people who ask and answer questions as best as they can.

None of the opinions here are from the company unless they are contributed by a member of staff (Laura is the most regular) who clearly have a RS badge next to their name.

Nigel,
Understood. I knew replies I might get would not necessarily reflect official RS responses. Just wanted to start a dialogue and hear what people had to say. Figured posts here would be as knowledgeable and friendly as anywhere else I could go.

Paul,
One concern I have (heard secondhand and still totally up in the air at this point) was that rental car companies could change policies with regards to crossing the border with Brexit. Maybe there's nothing to this, and maybe there won't be anything to it, but since we do plan on renting a car, this is a worry. That said, we are really excited and determined to visit the Antrim Coast. My wife is really looking forward to it!

I'm going early May and not at all worried about closed borders. UK is pulling out of some European commitments, not declaring war on their neighbors. My prediction: it won't be anything to get overly excited about.

I appreciate the original poster’s question as we will be traveling to I/NI in late May with a RS tour. Although I wasn’t terribly worried (figured the RS tour people would figure it out), the question of the effects of BREXIT and travel between I/NI did cross my mind. It was also interesting to learn about the CTA, very reassuring.
