Ireland with kids

Hello all, I’m new to this forum. I have been wanting to visit Ireland for years and we are in the beginning stages of planning a trip this summer with our children, ages 8 and 10 from the United States. And I couldn’t find any recent posts specific to traveling with children, so hopefully this thread can help others.

I am looking for itineraries suggestions. We are first time visitors to Ireland, but we have traveled overseas before, so the kids have experience with the jet lag and unfamiliar settings.

I am thinking of flying into Dublin and making our way west with a rental car and flying back to US from Shannon.

Any suggestions on cities to visit and particular sites to see (kid friendly) would be most welcome!

Out west, the museum/visitors center at the Cliffs of Moher had extensive kid-oriented exhibits and displays while we were there. Not that you’d necessarily do this with your children, but a lot of people walked past the “Danger! Do Not Walk Past This Sign!” sign, to walk out along the top of the 800 foot high cliffs. You can get a good view from a safe vantage point before you’d reach the sign.

The Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin’s old jail with tours, might be intriguing.
