Ireland road trip in June recommendations!!

Sooooo excited to be going to Ireland for 10 days in later June and I’m trying to at least get enough of a route planned that I can book lodging. I’ve wanted to see Ireland for years and am finally taking the (financial) plunge and bringing my sister with me!! :)
We have 10 days and are renting a car.
I’m wondering if these seem like a good batch of towns for home bases to explore from?
I’m thinking of Belfast 1 night, and then dividing up the rest between Galway, Doolin, Dingle, Beara Peninsula, with the last night back in Dublin.
Primary interests: traditional music (listening vs playing), local pubs, outdoor photography/scenery, hiking/biking, coastline (driving or exploring beaches/tide pools), horseback riding, off the beaten path finds. 🙂
Looking for affordable lodging options, pretty open as far as accommodations. Thanks soooo much in advance, Sláinte!

I've been to Ireland a few times, and am going back again this summer, so based on what you want to see, I would recommend staying in Galway, Dingle and Dublin.

In Galway, you can get to Cliffs of Moher and Aran Islands - plus the town itself is great, a lot to do there and lots of great trad. We did a tour from Galway that stopped in Doolin before going onto the Cliffs & Aran Islands. I've stayed at the Four Seasons Guesthouse - highly recommend.

I positively loved Dingle! The town itself is amazing, and you're close to the Beara Peninsula. But I would drive the Dingle Peninsula - less touristy (fewer tourist busses) and equally as beautiful. And I would also recommend a trip out to the Blasket Islands. We stayed at the Last Cottage B&B. I'm not sure if it is still open, but that was part of why we loved Dingle so much, was our host. We also did a tour of the Dingle Peninsula - the sights are so amazing, you may not want to drive, so you can see them yourself.

And if you stay in Dublin, there's lots to do in that town, but you can still get to Belfast easily enough. When I stayed in Dublin, we were in a small outside town, that I probably wouldn't do again - I would recommend just staying in Dublin. It might be better to just stay in Dublin and take a day trip out to Belfast, if you're only going to stay there for one day. This summer will be my first time in Belfast, so I don't have any recommendations yet. Good luck!

IMHO, you are covering too much ground in 10 days. Try to avoid one night stays. You can’t possibly see the island in that short of time.....so don’t try. With 10 nights pick 3 or 4 locations. Otherwise, you will mostly see Ireland from your car.

Have you already booked your tickets? Most of what you want to see is is in the Southwest, so it might make more since to fly in and out of Shannon, or open jaw Shannon/Dublin.

When you say you have 10 days, is that really 9 nights? Keep in mind that you could spend up to half a day getting to your next destination. If you are only staying one night, then you really only have an afternoon to explore the place, and the next day you are off again. Spending at least two nights will give you a full day wherever you are and you won’t have to worry about packing up every morning. (And we have done one nighters, but usually to break up a long drive, or as our last night before flying home.)

Unless you really want to see Belfast, I would probably skip it this time.

Whatever you do, it will be fun!

Thanks so much for the replies!!
We do already have our tickets, which in hindsight I should have probably done Dublin/Shannon, but I’ve learned for next time. :)

We have our lodging booked, car rented, and are beyond excited!!!!!!
Also, we did modify our route, including letting go of Belfast on this trip.
First day/night in Dublin
2 nights in Galway (explore the area/go to Connemara)
1 night in Doolin
2 nights in Dingle (explore the peninsula/pubs/go horseback riding)
2 nights in Kenmare (ROK and Beara Peninsula from there)

1 night in Cobh
Last night by airport
I can’t contain my excitement!!!! :):):)

Has anyone gone horseback riding while in Ireland?

Yup - through Dromquinna stables outside Kenmare. You can ride down sea side or up into incredible hills. Horses for all skill levels, moderate to inexpensive and huge fun. Absolutely gorgeous area. Have fun !

Hope your other thread helped ! You will have a great time - just never put itinerary ahead of lingering, exploring and overall experience of it !!!!!! Have a GREAT trip !
