Ireland Itinerary for September - suggestions

Trying to nail down our itinerary for Ireland in Sept.

There will be up to 4 in our party since we will only be in Ireland for a full 8 days I thought it would be best to stay in a few spots rather than be on the move constantly. We plan to rent a car.

Day 1 - Arrive in Dublin spend night in Dublin
Day 2 - Dublin
Day 3 - Rent car and travel to Killarney

Day 4-6 Killarney
Day 7 - Drive to Doolin spend night in Doolin
Day 8 - Head back to Dublin
Day 9 - Depart Dublin

A few questions.
1. I thought Killarney may be a good home base to catch the following: Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry, Portmagee for a boat trip around Skellig Islands, and Killarney National Park. Wondering if this is a good home base option.
2. Wanted to see the Cliffs of Moher but not sure if it is worth it or if there is something else in the Killarney area we should consider and just limit our visit to Dublin and Killarney?

Looking for feedback or suggestions.

Thanks

Hi Dacase90,

I was in Ireland in September of 2022 and had an amazing time. Good weather, cheaper prices, less crowds. I cannot speak to Killarney NP, but I would strongly recommend visiting the Cliffs of Moher.

This daytrip to see the Cliffs of Moher was the highlight of my trip for sure. Do yourself a favor and go a ferry cruise to see the cliffs from the water.

Safe travels.

Killarney makes a good base for what you want to do and see.

I always feel the Cliffs of Moher are much better seen from the sea on a boat trip. We were terribly disappointed when we visited as they were so busy . We had problems finding somewhere to park in the car park and you couldn't avoid the crowds at the cliffs themselves.

Rather than flog all the way up there, think about the Kerry Cliffs instead. They are actually higher than the Cliffs of Moher and I think more impressive (do a google image search) . They can be included in either a trip to Portmagee or as part of the Ring of Kerry.

In the time you have, I would limit yourself to Dublin and Killarney and forget about Doolin. There is so much to do and see in the area. One day for the Skellig trip. One day for Ring of Kerry (do try and include a visit to one of the stone forts - Staigue, Cahergal and Leacanabuile). One day for Dingle and Slea Head drive. One day for Killarney National Park (go for a boat trip on the lake, drive Gap of Dunloe, visit Muchross House and Traditional farms, Ross Castle....)

@wasleys
Thanks I was thinking the same thing limit myself to Dublin and Killarney and maybe skip the Cliffs of Moher/Doolin this time around.
