Ireland- is American Express a decent second credit card to take?

We travel to Ireland soon and have various reports that American Express is not accepted most places. Only MC and VISA. Is this true? No American Express throughout Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland?

Thank you for your expertise!

Speaking for the UK and Northern Ireland, you see a lot of notices in shops saying that Amex is not accepted, I believe because of how much it costs the shopkeeper. It’s not universal but I wouldn’t want to rely on being able to use Amex if your other card doesn’t work.

I think a using a Visa or Mastercard would be a better choice.

American Express is generally not popular and many places don't accept it.

Oddly very small businesses and sole traders with a single card terminal may very well accept Amex as under their deals everything costs the same. Amex takes a few more days to pay out though.

Amex no longer issue cards in the Republic of Ireland which has seen acceptance there decline in general.
