Hi, I have traveled to Ireland several times and have seen much of this beautiful country. My husband has only been once and wants to go again in Feb. Our plan is to see the North this trip and we will have 8 days. I have been to Derry, but that is really the only town north of Galway that I have been to and I am wondering what I might expect at this time of year. I know it seems an odd time of year but that is when we will be going. Any information/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
When you say North and refer to Derry (Londonderry) you are referring to Northern Ireland which is a separate country.
Is that where you intend to visit?
If yes then don't miss Belfast or the Giant's Causeway.
If you mean the northern part of Republic of Ireland, it will include Donegal (recently named by National Geographic as the coolest place on the planet to visit) and possibly the rest of the island north of Galway. Is that what you meant?
If your itinerary includes Belfast, you may want to visit the National Trust property Mount Stewart, former estate of the Marquess of Londonderry (note, though, that it is not near that city).
Hi, we are not restricting our trip to any one area. In my head I am thinking of starting in Donegal and traveling north to Derry (Londonderry) then around to Belfast and ending in Dublin to fly home again. I guess I am wondering if the tourist sites along this route will be interesting in February?
Hello!
I see your itinerary and want to mention that many rental car companies have different rules if you go out of RoI into N.I. Europcar, for example, charges 35 euros (last i checked) because, they said, they kick in a different insurance policy when you're in the U.K. You may want to email each car company you're considering and make sure you know the extra costs and if they allow you to take the car, there.
I know people that say "oh, they'll never know" but if your fine print says it's RoI only, and you have an accident....... yikes!
