Ireland in December

My husband and I are going to Ireland for 7 days the second week of December (Dec. 9 - 17) and want your recommendations for what to do! We are interested in history, architecture and art, and like anything that feels medieval/fantastic. We know, we might be crazy going at that time of year, but we plan to take it easy. We don't mind the cold but we do love Christmas cheer. We plan to spend about 3 days in Dublin and 3 days somewhere else.

My main question is: Where should that somewhere else be? We want to go somewhere accessible by train or bus, since we're not going to rent a car. Once we get to the destination, we'll take cabs to get to outlying castles, etc. We're interested in charming, romantic towns with enough to do to sustain a few days of leisurely walking, castle-touring, museum-going, pub-crawling, and light hiking (I'm pregnant so can't do anything too strenuous). I'm interested in trying to see the Northern Lights if any of the regular viewing places are accessible by public transport.

I'm also wondering about day trips from Dublin. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

The options are almost limitless, so you'd be better off narrowing your choices and then asking readers for advice. For example, give us a choice of three locations for your "somewhere else" 3-day stay. You can get ideas from looking at the Ireland videos and articles on this website, and of course the RS guidebook, as well as any other guidebooks you might care to buy. A few hours doing that type of background research will bring you to the point of identifying what most interests you and what your top priorities are for such a short visit.

This Irish govt website will help you identify places you can reach by public transport. https://www.ireland.com/en-us/what-is-available/getting-around-ireland/articles/public-transport/

The Rome2Rio site is useful for examining your options in getting from one specific location to another. There's also the Man in Seat 61 site https://www.seat61.com/ for rail travel.

Kilkenny is a good option ... only a short train ride from Dublin, as is Galway for a taste of Connemarra and the west.
Another suggestion would be Belfast - fascinating place and only about 2 hours by train from Dublin. The Titanic Museum and the Harland and Wolff shipyard would take most of a day if you're into Titanic lore. The city itself is beautiful, and there are day trips and tours up to the Causeway Coast, the walled city of Derry, Giant's Causeway and several Game of Thrones filming locations.

Thank you! Kilkenny and Belfast both look like great options. We're big GOT fans so that would be fun. I've read several guides but found them quite overwhelming because we're trying to pick only 1 place and there are so many options. Hence why I was asking for personal recommendations. I'm a seasoned traveler but not used to taking it easy and going to only 2 places and staying for such a short time.
