Ireland for the new year? Good idea?

Hello Rick Steve's Fans!

I will be getting married in December and have been put in charge of planning the honey moon. We both would like to see Ireland so I rushed out and purchased Rick's Ireland 2015 book. As I began to read it I realized the latitude is similar to that of Edmonton and therefore we will have really short days. Both my fiancee' and I don't mind the colder temps nor the light issue really. However, we are wondering if anyone has traveled this time of year and if its worth it? We have 9 days (flying out of Spokane or maybe Seattle, WA, 12/26 and returning 1/4/16), should we be thinking elsewhere in the world or can we make this work?

" We both would like to see Ireland "

Remember that this will just be your first trip aboard- why not start with this one to memorialize your wedding.

As long as you have a realistic handle on the length of the winter days you should be fine.

We went to Ireland last Thanksgiving and stayed through the first week of December. We were in Donegal and then Clifden on the North West coast.
The sun came up about 8:30 each morning and it was fully dark by 4:30...also very cloudy and rainy. I believe we had one day without rain. If you know what to expect as far as weather and hours of daylight and are OK with that, go for it.
There were NO crowds, but a lot of sights were closed because it was not really tourist season.
We have been to Ireland before and went specifically because we had this time period off from work.
I personally would not go that time of year again, only because I would like to see Ireland in a different season.

Talking to the locals even they get bummed in winters. Like said earlier the sun does not stay out much and is dark all the time.
