Ireland for St Paddy's Day ........but we don't drink

So my husband and I are planning a weekend in Ireland in March. We just want a relaxing short trip to enjoy the countryside and coastal scenery. He doesn't drink and I'm pregnant so we're not going for the beer...but the best time for us is St Paddy's weekend, ironically enough.

Neither one of us care to see any of the festivities and really truly just want to see Ireland in it's raw natural self - the true Ireland countryside. I know the cities will be packed, but should we consider another weekend to avoid the crowds and craziness of that weekend?

Unless you physically wander into a pub that day you're unlikely to experience any of the "craziness" that you speak of.
All stereotypes aside - your touring thru the Irish countryside will be unaffected by the fact that it's St. Patrick's Day.

I’m pretty sure a lot of people in Ireland don’t drink as well. I wouldn’t be concerned.

Yup, My friend in Dublin doesn't drink. And yes, she goes to pubs and doesn't feel uncomfortable.

That's very surprising to me. Growing up in North Eastern Pennsylvania I thought everyone did St Paddy's Day as big as they do in PA. Sounds like maybe they do it bigger in PA than they even do in Ireland lol!

Thank you for the replies! This is the best weekend for us but we were concerned to get caught up in unwanted Paddy's Day traffic. Sounds like that isn't the case at all for the countryside. Thank you all for your reassurance!!!

St. Patrick’s day is a bank holiday in Ireland, so some shops will be closed, transportation schedules may be more limited, etc.

We were in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day 2003. Wouldn’t do it again, but I’m not a big crowd kind of person. But outside of the cities, you probably won’t notice. Except for some closures. We were staying with friends outside of Cork for a few days prior, and they told us it very much an American hyped up holiday. In Ireland it’s more if a day to be with family. Of course there’s always the crowd that doesn’t need an excuse to get drunk….
