Ireland driving - trains instead of rental cars and suggestions for public transport friendly places

Planning a 2-3 week trip for early summer 2027. Having seen a lot of central and western Ireland using rental cars in the past we are not interested in driving on this trip. What's been your experience, both emotionally and logistically, to give up the freedom that having a car offers? Our plans are not in place at all, but hoping some of you have gone from car driving to trains and can offer some advice about the process. Do most areas have access to taxis, local drivers?

We are interested in seeing Northern Ireland and the northwest coast. Looking to find a seaside city/area to spend a week, just staying put in an area that's walkable, accessible to trains/buses for day trips, pubs, music and beaches, hiking, historical sites. Initally we're looking at Westport, Clifden, west coast locations north to and including Donegal. Any specific areas that worked for you using trains, buses?

Traveling from east coast US, so flying into Dubllin.

Thanks in advance, my fellow travelers.

A few thoughts on this, specifically to Co. Donegal, Co. Galway and N. Ireland. We have been to Ireland many times. Our last visit (which was only in Co. Galway) we did not rent a car and just used public transport and it was very easy, convenient. This past spring I was in Co. Donegal as well as N. Ireland and I did a mix of public transport with a few days of a rental car. Getting around some parts of Co. Donegal and N. Ireland can be difficult without a car, which is why we wound up renting a car for a few days. Buses to Derry and Belfast are plentiful and easy as is train service in N. Ireland. However, there is no train service in Co. Donegal, only buses. My son, who lives in Co. Donegal, uses public transport exclusively to get around. His advice is to plan enough transportation time if you do decide to use public transport exclusively as it will take much longer to get around but it is doable.

Our last trip to Ireland was all trains, buses and taxis. It worked great for us. Oh, we did take one 2-3 hr tour, a 12 seater van with driver/guide around the Dingle Peninsula. We were entirely in Southern and Southwestern Ireland not the North. But, yes, we did find taxis anywhere we needed them.
