Are there lots of bugs in summer? I hear about midges but don' know what they are? Should one wear long pants in the countryside?
We are also traveling to Ireland this summer. I just researched midges on Google. If what I found was true they bite just like a mosquito but do not carry any bad diseases. They are more prevalent in August and September. I guess you will need to prepare by bringing something that will protect you. I plan on carrying some Bounce fabric softeners which will help. I also think the Irish breeze along the coast will help. Good luck!
We've done quite a lot of hiking in Ireland and have never encountered them, but if you're concerned then do bring along some repellent or just stop off in a shop after arrival to get whatever the locals use.
We did encounter them while hiking in Scotland and about the only thing that worked there was industrial strength DEET.
I would recommend long pants as a general rule, if only to keep from getting scratched up on some of the narrow trails where you may encounter some gorse growing over the track.
Some waterproof boots might be a good idea too depending on how far off the beaten track you plan to go. Some of the trails can still be pretty boggy even if it hasn't rained in a few days.
Thank you!
