Ireland 7 day Itinerary - driving times

Would love some feedback on our planned driving itinerary in Ireland in a few weeks. We are driving a good portion, so we can add/adjust/delete stops as needed. I’ve read over and over that driving takes longer than Google tells you, so that’s my primary question. is this driving schedule reasonable? We want to have some time to enjoy each area rather than driving all day, so we are open to cutting out some stops as needed. Day 3 is really the day that I’m questioning. Appreciate thoughts:

Day 1 Arrive Dublin 6am. EPIC museum and Guinness Storehouse then Temple Bar district that evening
Day 2. Group Walking tour and free afternoon to visit spots we want to see more of
Day 3 Pick up rental car early (south city center) Drive to Rock of Cashel, Cahir and then on to Middleton for Jameson Distillery before landing in Cork City for the night
Day 4. Depart Cork and head to Blarney Castle then drive towards Dingle. Considering stops at Muckross House and Killarney Natl Forest before finishing drive to Dingle for the night.
Day 5 Slea head tour and other Dingle area activities. Sleep in Dingle
Day 6 Drive north to Ennis (sleep in Ennis) with stop along the way in Adare. Anywhere else we should stop?
Day 7 Cliffs of Moher (walking tour from Doolin). Sleep in Ennis
Day 8 Depart Shannon airport

I think your itinerary is generally doable. The drive to the Rock of Cashel and Cahir will be mostly on divided highway and you'll be able to speed along just fine. The real issue is how long you want to spend in each place. And also whether you want to wander down to Hoare Abbey while in Cashel. You'll also want to eat something before you get to Jameson. :-)

Day 4 is also doable but in my opinion you will be shortchanging Killarney National Park if you just make it a drive by.

On Day 4, I'd skip Blarney Castle and spend more time in Killarney NP. There are lots of nice walks.
On Day 7 you could replace the Cliffs walk with a view via boat, combined with a day trip to Inisheer or Inishmore which offers 3-4 hrs to walk around. Both islands have bike rentals and Inishmore has pony traps. Inisheer is walkable, while Inishmore might be too big.

I dis the Cliffs just because it's a traffic jam of jumbo tour buses with hoards of tourists. We tried to stop a few years ago in early May and decided to drive by entirely.

Driving in Ireland can be slow - it is recommended to plan on adding 25% to gooigle driving times and then add on time for stops. You also need to factor in time to find somewhere to park, get to where you want to be, comfort breaks etc. This can easily add another 30 minutes....

Day 3 - You are probably looking at a driving time of 3.5-4 hours plus stops. If visiting both Rock of Cashel and Cahir, you need to allow at least a good hour to do justice to them. You then have to add on time for Jamieston distillery too... It is doable, but is beginning to look like a long day.

I would also have similar concerns about Day 4 too. Muckross Housew ill be about an hour but much longer if you also include the traditional farms (well worth doing). I'm not sure what your plans are for Killarney National Forest....

I'll add a contrary note: Google Maps gave me excellent estimates of driving times. Driving in Ireland I found little different from driving in Ohio: motorways (essentially like US interstates) are modern and fast; secondary roads are like state or county roads (watch out for slow traffic, but generally 45-50 mph is doable); tertiary roads are like rural roads in southeast Ohio: could be 50 mph, could be 20 mph depending on what other vehicles are on the road.

I've read many comments about slow driving in Ireland, and I don't really understand the basis. Certainly we didn't experience it in our week of extensive driving there.

Thanks for the informative replies. We feel good about our itinerary and amount of driving. Allowing ourselves the opportunity to skip or add sites as we feel. Looking forward to a great week!
