My husband and I are going to Ireland for 6 days. We are flying in and out of Shannon and are planning to stay on the West coast. Should we go up to Galway and the Aran Islands, and then head south? Not sure where we should stay in the south that makes the most sense.

That's the trip we took in June 2011, except we were traveling by bicycle, so it took us 3 weeks :-)
If you're driving or going by Bus Eireann bus, you'll be traveling quicker.
We started in Galway, then took the ferry to Inishmore (the big Aran Island) for a night. Returning to the mainland, we got a B&B in Lisdoonvarna, which was a great base for visiting the Cliffs of Moher and The Burren. We eventually worked our way down to Dingle, one of Rick Steves' European "back doors."

Cyn's recommended itinerary is a perfect one. I love that she took the time and sent a night out on one of the Aran Islands.
Do try and rent a car, though it can be done by public transport.
Enjoy, theres so much to see and experience in the part of our beloved Island.
