International Drivers Permit in Ireland and car rental recommendations.

I will be doing a self driving tour in Ireland in about a month. I had read that it is okay to rent a car with a US drivers license but a IDP is recommended. Is it really needed, not even sure that I have enough time to get one at this point.

Also I have rented a car already, but saw better prices with Eurocar. Has anyone used them? would you recommend?

Thank you!

I'm assuming you mean Europcar. If so, our experience with them was fine. You can obtain an IDP at most AAA offices, and it is completed on the spot. Call ahead to ensure they can do it. Personally, I would not take the chance of getting pulled over and not having an IDP if you were asked to produce one. It's a simple, and inexpensive process.

It’s a pretty hefty fine if you’re pulled over and don’t have a IDP. Not a chance I would want to take in a foreign country especially when they’re so easy to get at AAA.

"U.S. citizens are permitted to drive in Ireland for the duration of a visit up to 12 months as a tourist. If you wish to apply for an International Permit for use during your visit you can apply through the AAA in the U.S. – you can find more information here ."

EDIT:
To clarify the above, Ireland does not require US or Canadian (generally speaking, licenses issued in English) license holders to get an IDP.

"Conclusion
In conclusion, for most foreign visitors, an international driving license is not required to drive in Ireland.

National driving licenses are generally accepted, but a certified translation or international driving license is recommended if your national license is not in English, or if you come from outside the EU. By following these simple tips, you can make the most of your exploration of Ireland’s roads, legally and safely."

I just rented a car in Ireland last month through My Irish Cousin and specifically emailed them this question. Their answer was the same as David's that Ireland does not require an IDP for US citizens with a license issued in English.

As said it is not a requirements. An IDP is required in some countries such as Italy so it can translate it. English is the language in Ireland so no translation and you will not be fined for not having one. Rental agency will not ask for it either since it is not the law. It has nothing to do with being an EU citizen or not.
