If we want to do a hike, how long are we given before the tour heads back to Galway?
Once we finished the small van tour of the island, I don't remember much time to do more than shop at a store near ferry and grab something to eat. It's a great tour though and I loved the country, the music and the dancing.
I'm asking because the description says "Or, you'll have plenty of time to set out on foot, hire a pony cart, or pedal a bike to explore this windswept island on your own."
We'd prefer to hike it if we have enough time there, but if we only have the length of time needed for a van ride, that really isn't practical.
I think it means take the small van tour we've arranged OR do your own thing, such as hiking. I don't remember exactly how much time, but I think total time on the island was around 2 hours at least. I bet the office could tell you a more exact time frame for the van tour. I remember we stopped at a couple places to walk around for awhile, especially the stop at Dun Aengus (which I really enjoyed.)
Yes. I want to hike or ride bikes to Dún Aonghasa and the Wormhole rather than sitting in a van. I just want to make sure we'll have time to do that before the tour heads back.
We all (RS tour) hiked to a fortress (which I think is the Dun Aonghasa) then took a van tour around the island, (getting out at various places. Very interesting stories by the local man who took us on the tour.) then we had a little bit of time to go into the shop, so you probably have about 2+ hours to do your own thing. The RS office can give specifics on your timing, and if your plans will work. I mostly remember vast and remote and windswept.
I recall in May 2024 that we climbed the rocks to Dun Aengus after the minivan dropped us off. It took a good amount of time for my partner to make it and I worked on some photography while I waited. Some others took much longer. Then we walked back to the food stand and got some sandwiches which took much too long. There was very little time left after that and it was frustrating to me not being able to venture very far at that point.
Thanks, folks! This was very helpful. It sounds like we can get some exercise and do the van tour. And that the tour guide makes the van tour worth it.
I did this tour a long time ago, but as I recall we did some van touring with the group and a delightful guide and then had free time to explore and get lunch. If you are wanting to hike, just be sure to tell your guide and they can help you plan a walk that makes sure you make it back in time to catch the ferry (which, you won't want to miss). This tour day is also entirely weather dependent and if there are rough seas you may not get to go at all. No way to know that ahead of time.
