Inishbofin

We are staying in Clifden for 4 nights. I'm considering a day trip to Inishbofin. Has anyone been for just a day? What did you do? I understand there are walking tours. Any other ideas? THANKS!

We caught the local ferry from Cleggan on our last trip and spent a pleasant day hiking around the island. Stopping to chat with one of the locals out harvesting peat was one our favorite memories.
Then again, we had been to Ireland several times and were looking for an outing that was off-the-beaten tourist path, which Inisbofin certainly was.
It's a matter of priorities I suppose. Don't want to disparage Inisbofin, which we loved, but with so much else to see and do in and around Connemara it wouldn't make my top ten list as a 1st time visitor. A day out on Inishmore, a scenic drive around Sky Road, Connemara National Park, the cute little village of Cong, Kylemore Abbey, etc. would be my suggestions for better ways to spend your time if it's your first trip.

Thanks, Robert. This is actually our 3rd visit to Ireland and Connemara. We are looking for more of the off the beaten path stuff now! So your description sounds lovely!

Thanks

Sounds like you'll enjoy Inisbofin then.
Another place that we recommend, especially if you're at all interested in the history of the famine years is Doolough - about an hour's drive north of Clifden. We thought it was one of the most evocative places we visited in Ireland.
Here's a link that briefly describes what happened there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doolough_Tragedy
