We will be in Galway and southwest Ireland may 5-17. Is hurling season still going on? How do we find matches if so?
I hope this is a helpful response, but I am unsure. I had never even heard of Hurling, until I went to Ireland last summer. Then, we took a walking tour of Ennis, with a young lad named Ollie. He told us all about Hurling and even had the sticks and we got to play against him. OMG! Hard! Ollie told us the most popular sport in Ireland is Hurling. The second, Gaelic Football! Another one I had never heard of!
So, I would check with any local schools or tourist offices to find out about Hurling matches. Good luck! ..............travel broadens your horizons!
Another lesson learned: Apparently, a match or tournament is called a "fixture." http://www.galwayhurling.com/
Meredith you will see that most of the hurling takes place out east in Ireland, not so much out west, it is somewhat regional and is seasonal as well. I looked for hurling out near Dingle, Kenmare last May and didn't have any luck. I'm sure some Irish folks will offer some guidance. They may play up near Galway. What we did do was take in a Gaelic football "fixture" and it was a blast. Dingle was playing Killarney in a senior league event championship rematch so it was a big deal at the time. The crowd was awesome (played in Dingle) and the game was fast moving, physical, and really really fun. The players were early 20's late teens representing their county. The fans enjoyed explaining the game to us, the real fun of Ireland is getting to interact with the locals. So, if in the southwest see if it will be possible to take in a Gaelic football, game you wont regret it!!
