Is a Howth day trip from Dublin doable on one's own or is it best to book a tour?
Either way......any recommendations?

I haven’t done this yet, but have it on my list as a day trip for my trip next year. According to my notes, it’s an easy 30-minute ride on the DART (local train) and the train station in Howth is right in town. And then the cliff walk is not that from the train station. So, I think definitely doable on your own.
If you do a search on you tube, there are several videos of Howth.

Yeah, definitely! Howth is a great day trip from Dublin and totally doable on your own. Plus, it can be really fun to explore it on your own. However, booking a tour can be nice too if you want to make sure you don't miss out on any of the sites. Either way, you're sure to have a blast!
