First visit to Ireland for 7 days starting in Dublin. How manageable would traveling by train be?
The destinations served by rail are somewhat limited, so most tourists relying on public transport will also need to use buses. See info at http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/ireland-rail-passes. Most guidebooks include a rail map and bus connection notes.
When I was in Ireland we used the trains to go long distance to main cities, then walked or took buses to other places. We took the train from Dublin to Cork spent time there then traveled from Cork to Galway, then eventually went back from Galway to Dublin. You should most definitely book your train ticket online ahead of time because it will be much cheaper! Good luck and enjoy (Ireland is my favorite European Country!).

Irish trains serve all the counties except Donegal in the far northwest. In all, it's dependable, in expensive and service is frequent to most places.
Just got back from an 8 day trip. Took the train/bus from Dublin to Dingle. Train ran to Tralee with 1 change. Bus connection was very easy. Train was comfortable and reserved seats are denoted on a screen above the seats. Most seats are a group of four with a table. There are some seats that are just two with no table. Always book on the internet instead of buying tickets at the station, it will save Euros. One caution, the round trip ticket cannot be replaced if you loose it, so put it in a safe place (sad lesson learned the hard way).
