Hotel/B&B on Inishmore, Aran Island

We are planning to stay overnight on Inishmore in August. Any suggestions for a place to stay for a night? Thanks.

If this recommendation isn't too late, we stayed at the Man of Aran Cottage B&B (manofarancottage.com) for one night in June 2011, and strongly recommend it. You can screen their video of the Man of Aran film in the living room on a comfy chair by the peat fire - positively atmospheric and wonderful! Best of all, the owner, Joe is a fantastic chef, and we wouldn't have missed dinner there. Breakfast the next morning was outstanding, as well. Got a great night's sleep, too.

DId you find that staying at the Man of Aran B&B was inconvenient since it is a little ways from town? Did you walk to it or bike or take a taxi?

We took bikes over with us on the ferry, so while it took a little energy and time (the roads have some hills) pedaling there was part of the appeal. It was raining pretty hard the next morning, but cleared up a few minutes after we headed out. A taxi could get you there quicker and possibly drier! The setting, though, and great meals made it worth getting to the Man of Aran for us.

Killmurvey House-- highly recommended. A few years back, I spent ten days on Inishmore in late August, as tourists were leaving, and the residents of the island came out of their shells and back into their lives. It was a vacation from my three-month solo journey, and a life-changing experience. To walk the island and explore the ancient ruins, chat with the people, go to the pub. dún dúchathair, or the black fort, one of the ruins, was hauntingly beautiful. The proprietor is wonderful, and will make you feel part of the island family, tell you stories, and boy do they have stories there!
