I will be staying in Dublin for one night in May. I tried Couchsurfing, but so far haven't found someone who can host me so I'm looking into hostels. I'm 45 years old, but I don't mind staying with a younger rowdier crowd. This will be my first time staying in a hostel, so I'm interested to hear if anyone has any first-hand experience with the Dublin hostels near the Temple Bar or Grafton Street areas. I've read lots of reviews, and they are a mixed bag and it's hard to decide where to stay. Any advice is appreciated!
For central locations I've stayed at three different hostels.
In order of favorites.
Avalon House (located on R114, directly south of Temple Bar) has a great staff and a wonderful coffee shop below it. The coffee shop is the Bald Barista. Also they have some great bars, cafés and shops located near by.
Kinlay House (located on Lord Edwards St., on the edge of Temple Bar, across the street from Christ Church Cathedral) has a great staff, no wonderful cafe below, but your steps away from street after street of bars, cafés and shops.
Isaacs Hostel (located on the Northside of Dublin, near the Busáras/central bus station) has a great staff, but isn't always the best looking neighborhood to be walking in at night.
I highly recommend the Globetrotters Hostel. When I stayed there in 2005 a fabulous full Irish breakfast was included. However, I don't know if that is still true because the website doesn't mention it.
