I have friends who rode on horseback through Gap of Dunloe. I have looked on line but can only find tours that will take you in a horse drawn carriage or cart. Does anyone know of a company that offers horseback riding tours? Thanks
You could start with this website, Lauri: http://www.aire.ie
Most places that offer 'trekking' are adjacent a long strand of beach, or connected with the grounds of a manor house hotel.
We've hiked 'The Gap' (and taken the jaunting cars the opposite way) from Kate Kearney's Cottage to Lord Branson's Cottage. To be honest, the only people we saw riding horses were the children of the horsemen, doing so as part of training a young one to become a good puller.
Most of the traffic there is one-way. That let's you get in a boat ride as well, across the lakes and back into town at Ross Castle. But if you bypassed the water part and just drove up to Kate Kearney's, there are always plenty of equestrian folk there to ask for local suggestions.
Try Equitours http://www.equitours.com/choose-your-ride/ They have 6 rides in Ireland, I haven't been on one yet but am hoping to go on one soon. They have excellent reviews from people who have been on the rides. Another company I have looked into is Ride World Wide based out of the UK, but they currently don't offer any rides in Ireland. Have a great time if you go!
