I am traveling to Ireland for the first time in May. I will be meeting my father there, who is doing a bit of an organized tour with his siblings before I arrive. They will be hitting many sites in the South & West and I will be meeting them in Doolin. His crew will be flying out from Shannon and we will be getting a rental car there and will eventually fly out of Dublin seven days later. I am hoping for a few suggestions for a good homebase or bases for our stay. I am not as interested in seeing a lot of tourist destinations and would rather find something a little off the beaten track where we can walk, eat, hear some music, read or see some art, etc. So our parameters are quite wide! Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
Since your father will have already toured the south and west, would you be interested in the region from Westport to Connemara north to Donegal, and perhaps Northern Ireland?
We are up for almost any destination, though don't want to spend to much time driving particularly on the tail end when we are getting ready to fly out of Dublin! Any recommendations are welcome!
One suggestion would be to stay in or near the pretty little town of Clifden, from which you could explore Connemara at your leisure and (as the spirit moves you) take the ferry out to the Aran Islands, take another out to Inishbofin, enjoy the scenic Sky Road, or just meander around one of the prettiest regions in Ireland.
When you're ready to head to Dublin for your return flight just drop the car in Galway and take the train.
Thank you so much for your suggestions! That sounds like a lovely plan.
