Help with Cliffs of Moher Itinerary

Hello! I will be traveling to Ireland in June for 10 days. I'm pretty set on my itinerary except for the second half of our trip. I would really appreciate any feedback on what would be easiest/most realist to do. The hotels cannot be changed at this point so we are more worried about scheduling daily activities and not exhausting ourselves. This is both our first time in Ireland and we have rented a car so we have flexibility. Our main question is - when should we see the cliffs are Moher...on day 7 or 9. See our basic itinerary below:

  • Day 6 - Stay in Killarney (do ring of Kerry)
  • Day 7 - Drive up to Galway, spend night in Galway
  • Day 8 - Spend night in Galway
  • Day 9: Drive down to limerick to sleep before we fly out next morning

SO should we stop to see doolin/the cliffs on the drive from Killarney to Galway on day 7? We really want to do the ferry to Inis Oirr and see the cliffs that way so we recognize this would be an all day thing and we would most likely have to skip seeing dingle. OR should we see the cliffs on day 8 by driving back down after spending the night in Galway? This means less time in Galway but more time exploring west coast on drive up. I hope this all makes sense!

Driving from Killarney to Doolin is going to take about 3 hours and you need to arrive at least 30 minutes before sailing time. Galway is another 90 minutes drive from Doolin, so yes a long day.

The other alternative would be on day 9 to drive to Doolin from Galway, do the ferry and then drive to Limerick. This is less far to drive than starting from Killarney and in the circumstances would be my preferred choice.

While you could double back on yourselves to visit Doolin on Day 8 this does rather make a mockery of heading to Galway for the night. It would be a shame to miss out on the scenery in Connemara.

Wow, that is so smart! I didn’t even think about doing it on the way down to limerick. Thank you.
