Help! Visiting the Aran Islands in the rain

It’s rainy and quite windy, and we’re meant to ferry to Inishmore tomorrow and spend the night. Assuming the ferries are running, should we still go? Would we enjoy Inishmore in the rain?

I can't help, but am interested in how this works out for you since I will go going there this summer.

We're going in early July, so statistically a better chance of decent weather, but it's western Ireland, so you can get rain any time. I'm planning to go no matter the weather, and we will be bringing along full, good rain gear just in case it rains hard the whole time we are there. We will be there for two nights, and we will be flying in - I'm assuming the plane goes in all but the worst weather (the planes are small, but capable of flying in rainy/cloudy weather...but very high winds could cancel the flights).

It rains a lot in Ireland (you know, the "Emerald Isle" is green for a reason...there's also the old saying that there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing...). One silver lining: if it's raining, that should keep the crowds down.

I'm sure some days get washed out pretty good even in high summer. I would be interested to hear from others who have been there on rainy days, and how that went. Good luck and please post back about how it went for you.

Actually, the forecast isn't just showing rain but a full blown Spring storm with highs in the 40's and winds gusting to over 40 mph. Not a good day to be out and about, especially anywhere near the unfenced cliff at Dun Aengus.
Your call, but sometimes the better part of valor is to find a warming peat fire and hunker down for the day. Good luck.

I was told, when I was there last summer, that if it is too windy, the ferries (from Doolin) will not run but just rain does not affect the schedule. Sounds like you have both. I went to Innis Oirr in the rain last July. There was light to moderate rain most of the day but little wind, and warmer temperature. It was misty and sort of magical walking around the island in the rain with appropriate attire.

I'd make sure the ferries are going to make it back as well later (are you staying the night?).

I'd also take a taxi van around rather than rent a bike (that may have been your plan anyway).

Hopefully, you've packed the right gear for a rainy, windy day (hint: an umbrella will be worthless in those winds) You should be waterproof and/or quick dry to the maximum extent possible. This is the day for the wool socks and extra layers under your coat.

I hope things went well. We were on Inis Mor for 2 days and nights last September, and while the weather on Day 1 was fantastic and we got to cover a lot of ground and see a lot, it was torrential rain and sideways wind almost all of day 2, which we spent inside our B&B. The plants in their planter box out front got shredded by the storm.

The rain let up just long enough at the end of the afternoon to allow us to fly back to the mainland. No ferries had arrived throughout the day, and I'm not certain whether anyone taking a ferry was able to get off that day either. The plane's the way to go!
