Back to Dublin at the latest Thursday
And your question is?!?!?
How does it sound? Also where to stay on the way back to Dublin?
Your best bet for the Wicklow Mountains is probably on the way to Cork. I've not been there, so you can see if it fits with your plans.
Leaving Killarney area, I would head towards Newgrange, and think of stopping at Trim or Slane. They both have castles:
Trim Castle, or King John's Castle is the largest Norman castle in Ireland, and parts of the movie Brave Heart were filmed here.
Slane Castle is in the area of the Battle of the Boyne and has lots of history associated with it. It also is used for rock concerts since it has a huge natural amphitheater.
Both are on the way and close to Newgrange. If you haven't yet, you might have your boys check out what they might be interested in seeing. Newgrange is definitely worth the visit. It is unlike anything you'd find in the US.
From there, you can drive down to Dublin Airport and drop off the car, then take a bus into Dublin.
Remember, driving in Ireland always take longer than you would imagine, so tack on some extra time to your routes.
