Help choosing a month long stay in Ireland

We (a happy family of 4, kids 11 and 15) will be traveling for about 5 months. Some of this will be intense traveling of 2 days here, 3 there for a couple of weeks at a time, so we want to take a month in Ireland to have a different experience, getting to settle down for a bit before the next round of fast-paced travel.

We are all music lovers and everyone but me sings beautifully so a town with a lot of chances to hear (and sing along) would keep us all cheery.

We are more interested in smaller towns, and will want to be able to do day trips.

Any suggestions?

Thank you all in advance!

How many locations do you want? You could pick three or four and spend a week in each, or you could just pick two and spend a couple of weeks. Do you want to go to Northern Ireland at all? I know you say small towns, but I think Dublin deserves at least a few days. Galway was my favourite area, the Cliffs of Moher, Burren, Connemara, Aran Islands. Somewhere near Killarney for the park, lake, Gap of Dunloe, Muckross, Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry. Another area might include Kilkenny, Glendalough, Rock of Cashel, Kinsale. Some of the small towns may run out of things to do in a couple of days so it might be better to be near a larger town in order to find evening entertainment. Places like Galway and Killarney really aren't all that large, and if you stay on the outskirts it will seem like a small town, but they will offer more activities in the evening. I guess it will come down to how much driving you want to do during the day to get to places you want to see. I'm sure others here will have different advice, but I would start with Galway and Killarney and go from there. Both were good for music, and both have a good variety of activities in the area. But, there are so many nice places in Ireland I don't think you can go wrong no matter where you go.

I cannot speak to the North as we only toured the South last summer. For the south, I would pick 2 locations: On the outskirts of Dublin and then Dingle on the coast. You can easily so day trips from both spots.

I stayed in Ennis, County Clare for 21 days last November and fell in love with the town.... multiple sessions every night, very friendly people. I stayed at the Rowan Tree Hostel, inexpensive and just perfect. From the hostel, you can walk to any place you'd want to go to in town. There's a shared kitchen so you don't have to eat out, the staff are top notch, the place impeccably clean and you can book a room for just your family. I highly recommend it and am hoping to make it back this November. From Ennis, you can take the bus to the burden, the cliffs, etc... If you and your family love music, then Ennis is the place imho. :-)
