Head wear for Sept if going on Ferries or to Western Isles should be a pull-on knit hat or a rain resistant or wool hat that won't blow off. A wool sharf is handy for the ladies.

You can pick up a wonderful Irish wool cap in Ireland and it will serve you well your entire trip. My husband wears his back here in the states all fall and winter and spring. I took my usual black wool beret. We both had a rain jacket with hood for those extra wet or cold days.
