We are on the Heart of Ireland tour May 31-June 10. Does anyone have recommendations on where to see in person a harpist? Either pub or concert?
I can’t offer a definite recommendation, but wanted to say that pubs are generally drop-in sessions. A musician comes to the pub with their instrument, and whomever else is there, they all play. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a harpist in a pub. Fiddles, accordions, guitars, the occasional pipe, and a bodhran or two, but no harps. Every glass of Guinness, with the Guinness logo, has a harp on it, but to hear an actual harp in a pub would be a rare treat.
BUT, your timing is perfect. The tour starts in Ennis, during the Fleadh Nua music festival - the last few days of it. Go to Ennis a day or two early before the tour starts (to beat jet lag and get situated), and I’ll bet there will be harps there. We went two years ago, and I don’t recall seeing or hearing a harpist, but the big festival includes classes, performances, and events that attracts the best musicians in Ireland, plus some enthusiastic, talented amateurs, too. Here’s the Website; maybe contacting the festival will provide more info about harps and players: https://www.fleadhnua.com/programme
