Harding Hotel Dublin - great hotel, concerns about staff

We just returned Friday from Ireland. Our trip ended with three nights at the Harding Hotel. We loved the huge room, and the breakfast at the restaurant below was terrific (especially the big coffee/tea cups after all the miniature cups at the B&Bs!). Our room was only on the 2nd floor, but was quiet enough.

I was alarmed though by some comments by one of the desk staff. We were traveling with another couple who in conversation mentioned to her that we were following RS's book. She was very negative. She told them:

  • She doesn't like Rick's recommendations (her example was that NO ONE really should bother with Kilmainham Gaol). Unbelievable.
  • She doesn't agree with the way he runs his tours (too regimented, not enough free time). I wonder how she came to that conclusion? I haven't taken one but have looked and there seems to be a good amount of free time.
  • Most alarmingly, she said she hates when his groups are in the hotel because the tour members are old, lack mobility and are high maintenance.

I was stunned that those comments were made to hotel guests. I must be clear we were made really welcome. I hope Rick's groups haven't had the misfortune to meet this particular person at the desk.

She was obviously full of blarney since those descriptioms do not come close to true for rs tours or no tours are run. It

Although I have only been on 3 RS tours, her assessments of the RS tours was way, way off base. I have met RS haters who cannot give me a reason for their opinions or have unfounded opinions. Some of our tour members were in their late 70's early 80's but you would never know it based on their energy and enthusiasm. They were young at heart and a pleasure to be around. The one RS hater that I toured with on a non RS tour was a total grump and would not be a welcome addition on a RS tour.
