Guide for long layover day-tour of Dublin area?

My family of three adults is arriving this Sunday, June 21, in Dublin at 08:15. We depart again at 17:35. We don't have checked bags but have carryons and personal item bags. I was planning to take a bus or taxi into Dublin for part of the day, but we're probably going to be pretty tired, and it's a LONG layover, so I was thinking about maybe hiring a local guide for the day. Looking for someone who can pick us up at the airport, get us to breakfast, a relaxing tour for the day, and back to the airport mid-afternoon. Any recommendations for local guides, or suggestions on how best to spend this kind of day? One idea we had was just to take a train to the Howthe area and hang out on the coastal cliffs for the day, weather permitting.

Thanks for any tips,
Jason

I suggest leaving your carry-on bags with SmarteCarte at the airport and taking a bus or taxi into the city. The main tourist sites in Dublin are centrally located, and the city is very walkable. I found these tour options on AirBnB Experiences:
https://www.airbnb.com/s/Dublin--Leinster--Ireland/experiences?place_id=ChIJL6wn6oAOZ0gRoHExl6nHAAo&refinement_paths%5B%5D=%2Fexperiences&acp_id=202e1de9-86ac-43e8-9e7c-e8de0c090a30&date_picker_type=calendar&checkin=2026-06-21&adults=3&source=structured_search_input_header&search_type=filter_change&query=Dublin%2C%20Leinster%2C%20Ireland&experience_time_of_day%5B%5D=morning&experience_time_of_day%5B%5D=afternoon

If you want to go to Howth (also a fine idea), I think a taxi is a better choice, as I believe you would have to go into the city to get a train out there (or take a 90-minute bus ride, which isn't advised for tired people).

I agree with G3rryCee. Take a taxi into Dublin, have brunch and walk around a bit. It’s probably going to take a bit to get through immigration and stow your luggage then you need to travel back, gather your luggage and go thru security and immigration once again.

Thank you both for those suggestions. The inertia of the universe says don't try to do too much. I like the idea of a nice relaxing brunch in Dublin. I'm sure we'll easily find many choices, but any recommendations on a good place you've been before?

I liked Matt the Thrasher and their seafood, we’ve been twice but I’m sure others have great recommendations.
