Getting around in Dublin

I am sure this has been discussed but did not find it when I searched for it.

We will be in Ireland next month an the first three days we are in Dublin. Our plans are to not rent a vehicle so will be traveling between cities by train. But while we are in Dublin, what is the best way to get to different destinations? For example, our first day, we are planning on visiting City Hall. We will then be walking to the other destinations as they are close, then returning to our hotel later. We do have tickets for Hop On Hop Off bus, so we COULD wait for them but that could really impact our schedule as we have no idea how soon they may pick us up and then to arrive at our first stop

So should we roll the dice with the HOHO bus, city bus, taxi?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Public transport , buses and trams, is available in Dublin. If you download the City Mapper App and then set your city as Dublin when you arrive, you can use it for real time transit information that includes maps.
