Hi! I am doing a road trip starting in Wexford and ending in Dublin. Mostly one night stays except the final two in Dublin and 2 at a cute cottage in the Gap of Dunloe right at the door of the gap. Any recommendations for what to do while staying in the Gap. I was just planning to walk the trails on foot and go to Katie Kearney's.
In the Gap you can hike, walk or rock climb. If in season you could take the boat and pony trap ride.
Per Claudia, there are pony traps that depart from Kate Kearney's that go to the head of the Glen and back... about 7 miles round trip. You may be able to find one that will take you all the way to Lord Brandon's Cottage for a nice lunch overlooking the lake. The traps usually start running around 8:30 or 9 AM fyi.
There are also longer trips that will take you from Killarney by boat across the lake to Lord Brandon's, lunch there I believe, thence by trap one-way to Kate Kearney's where you'll board a bus or van for transport back to Killarney. Don't think you can start the trip from the Gap but you might want to inquire locally about that.
If you're in the area and have the time you might consider driving the very pretty Skellig Ring Road from Portmagee around to Waterville. It's a very scenic drive with picture postcard views of the Skelligs, and which goes by the Kerry Cliffs - another very pretty place for a photo op.
OK I will make a note of that road. we will be there new years so not sure if the pony will be going?
I don't think the longer trip across the lake operates in January.
Though it'll be off-season and you'll be faced with short days and the likelihood of rainy weather, I suspect that at least some of the traps will be operating thru the Glen to service the few tourists that will still be in the area.
Check with the host at your accommodation - they probably can hook you up with one of the local operators. As long as they're guaranteed a booking I'm sure something can be arranged.
If you're interested in Downton Abbey era stately homes, check out Muckross House (http://www.muckross-house.ie/).
If you're interested in waterfalls, check out Torc Waterfall (https://www.killarneynationalpark.ie/visit-us/torc-waterfall/).
These are both short drives away, between the south end of the Gap and Killarney.
Terrific! I have made a note of those two things. Thanks!
Thanks irish road trip. I think walking and chilling at Kates will be just fine too. Especially since it is new years!
