Galway vs Dingle?

Any advice on galway vs dingle? We will be in Ireland 6-7 days and plan on a few days in Dublin and a few days on the west side of ireland. Any opinions on which would be better?

We plan to fly open jaw-- has anyone does this? Into Dublin and out of ???? (Shannon?) Are all of the ireland airports fairly large enough to rely on rental car pick up and drop off?

Is the time driving truly about 5 hours from Dublin to Dingle (google maps says 4 hours but from what i understand it will be substantially longer?

Thank you! :)

The Dingle Peninsula is the most beautiful spot in the world! We have flown into Shannon and out of Dublin, as well as into and out of Shannon. Shannon airport is so easy and small but Dublin is not bad. There is also a hotel (The Park Inn?) right at the airport in Shannon so you can drop off your car the night before and walk across the parking lot to the airport in the morning if you have an early flight. We are not city people so Galway did not appeal to us as much as the small town on the Dingle Peninsula.

Dingle, hands down Dingle and yes car rental not a problem at either airport. Flying open jaw is a great way to see Eire.

Definitely Dingle. I'd suggest fly into Dublin, generally from the states you arrive early Am with no rest and little or no desire to drive on the opposite side of the road on the first day. Hang out in Dublin 2-3 days without car. Stay over in city such as Kilkenny for one night, Dingle 2 or 3 then maybe Adare for a night then fly out of Shannon. Been there twice, stayed in a B and B in Dingle both times, took a day trip to/through Galway but never stayed there.

I would definitely recommend Dingle over Galway. The Dingle peninsula is where we spent out 25th wedding anniversary i n 2009 and it was fantastic!

Again, Dingle, no doubt in my mind. Of all the places we stopped in Ireland, Dingle was definitely our favorite and Galway was actually our least favorite (not that Galway was bad by any means). Shannon is a pretty convenient airport to either Dingle or Galway (more so than Dublin anyways). We didn't drive straight from Dublin to Dingle, but figure you'll have a long stretch on the M7 (a very modern, fast highway), then a stretch along the N21 to Tralee (which is a secondary highway, with some stretches you can drive at a reasonable speed, and others where you'll pass through town centers). Then from Tralee to Dingle, it's fairly slow moving (although a very beautiful drive). I would say you are looking at at least 5 hours, maybe more. Plan a stop along the way to break up the ride! Maybe consider seeing the Rock of Cashel in Cashel. This won't add too much overall driving time, will break up the ride, and allow you to see another very interesting spot.

Dingle. Galway is nice, but Dingle is Dingle.
